Learn moreSouth Norfolk, Virginia · City of Chesapeake
South Norfolk is the oldest and most urban of Chesapeake's six historic boroughs, a tight street grid right up against the Norfolk city line, built up around Poindexter St and Bainbridge Blvd well before most of the rest of Chesapeake existed as suburbs. The South Norfolk Jordan Bridge carries traffic across the Elizabeth River to Portsmouth, and the Money Point waterfront has been an industrial and shipping hub for generations. Lakeside Park anchors the residential side of the borough. It's a longer haul from the yard than the southern boroughs -- north up George Washington Hwy and across on Campostella Rd, roughly twenty minutes.

This is Chesapeake's oldest housing stock by a wide margin -- pre-war homes from the early-to-mid 1900s set close together on a real street grid, many with little to no driveway at all, so on-street parking and placement is the norm rather than the exception. Lots are small, sidewalks and curbs are tight, and the streets themselves are narrower than what we deal with in the newer parts of the city, which means we plan our truck's swing and backing room more carefully here than almost anywhere else on the route. Down near Money Point the properties turn industrial and commercial, with bigger paved yards that are easier to work with.
Older-home renovation is the bread and butter here, and that means plaster and lath, old trim and sometimes cast iron that puts a container over its weight limit well before it looks full. Roof tear-offs are common on housing this age. Down at Money Point we handle industrial and commercial cleanouts and demolition debris tied to the working waterfront. Because so many streets have no real driveway, a fair share of our South Norfolk work involves coordinating curbside placement before the truck ever shows up.

North on George Washington Hwy to Campostella Rd, or up Bainbridge Blvd, about twenty minutes from the yard. The South Norfolk Jordan Bridge gives us a direct link across from the Portsmouth side when a job calls for it.

On a lot of South Norfolk streets the honest answer is the curb or the street itself, which is common in this part of the city given how the old grid was laid out. We'll work out the placement with you ahead of time and keep the box clear of fire hydrants, corners and driveways on either side so it doesn't create a problem for the block.
It's the age of the housing stock. A lot of South Norfolk homes still have original plaster and lath walls, sometimes cast iron radiators or pipe, and that material is dense -- a 20 yard can hit its tonnage a third full of plaster alone. For a full interior gut on an older home we'll often suggest a smaller box and a second haul instead of one that can't legally be driven full.
Yes, that's regular work for us given the industrial and shipping activity down there. Those properties typically have more paved yard space than the residential streets do, which makes placement straightforward, and we can size up to a 30 yard for demolition or heavier commercial debris.
Most are fine, but a handful of the older blocks are tight enough that we plan the approach and turnaround before we commit a loaded truck to them. If your street is one of the narrower ones, we may recommend a shorter box that's easier to set and retrieve without the truck having to maneuver as much.
