Learn moreDeep Creek, Virginia · City of Chesapeake
Deep Creek is one of Chesapeake's six historic boroughs, and it still feels like its own place, sitting along the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River and bordering the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge to the south. The Dismal Swamp Canal, the oldest continually operating man-made canal in the country, runs right through it, with the historic Deep Creek Lock still working on the waterway. The main spine is Deep Creek Blvd and George Washington Hwy, carrying a mix of waterfront homes, wooded residential streets and pockets of newer subdivisions. It's a short run south from the yard, mostly straight down George Washington Hwy through the Western Branch and Bowers Hill side of town.

Along the canal and river you'll find older homes on larger wooded lots, many with a dock or a bulkhead, sitting close enough to the water that a good storm surge or heavy rain event backs the ground up fast. Further from the water there are ranch homes and newer construction off George Washington Hwy with more typical paved driveways. Tree cover is heavy through most of the borough given how close it sits to the Dismal Swamp, and a few of the older lanes near the swamp edge are still unpaved. As everywhere in Chesapeake the water table sits high, so it's crawlspace and slab construction here, not basements, and low ground floods first in a hard rain.
Waterfront dock and bulkhead work is a Deep Creek staple given the canal and river frontage, and that debris -- treated lumber, hardware, sometimes concrete footings -- gets handled separately from general trash. We see plenty of storm and flood cleanup here given the low-lying ground near the swamp and the waterways, residential remodels on the older homes, and land-clearing debris on lots near the wildlife refuge boundary, where we're careful to keep the work on the buildable side of the wetland line.

South from the yard on George Washington Hwy (US-17) through the Western Branch/Bowers Hill area into Deep Creek, about fifteen minutes. Battlefield Blvd and Shell Rd reach the eastern side of the borough when a job is closer to the canal.

Yes, we work these lots regularly, but if the property backs directly onto refuge or wetland ground we keep the container and any land-clearing debris on the buildable side of the line. If your project already has wetland permitting attached to it, tell us and we'll follow whatever boundary that sets.
It gets kept separate from your general trash. Treated lumber, hardware and any concrete footings from a dock or bulkhead job are handled differently than household debris, so we'll typically bring a container specifically for that material rather than mix it into a general renovation load.
It's some of the lowest-lying ground we serve, so yes, heavy rain and hurricane-season storm surge back the water up here faster than in higher parts of the city. We watch the forecast before confirming a delivery near the canal, and we'd rather move a date than deliver into ground that's already saturated.
Usually, if the ground is reasonably firm. We can lay planking under the wheels on soft dirt or gravel, but if a lane is genuinely waterlogged from recent rain we'll set the container nearer the road rather than risk getting a loaded truck stuck. Describe the drive when you call and we'll plan around it.
